A quality protein powder is an essential tool for losing weight. In my 28-day protein shake diet, I was able to drop 34 pounds consuming just a quality protein shake coupled with EPA/DHA, powdered greens and a multivitamin.
Remember, when choosing a protein shake, find one that tastes good. If not, it will be difficult to stick with the diet for long term.
Also, make sure that there are no more than 3 grams of carbohydrates per scoop and keep it as low fat as possible.
Some protein shakes also contain vitamins and minerals. I prefer to get electrolytes that are lost when you switch to a low-carb diet from my protein powder.

If you want to keep track of your body fat %, I strongly recommend a Tanita Body Fat scale. These are amazing! Just make sure that you always take your weight upon waking up in the morning, after urinating and before eating.
